We are proud to be one of the sponsors of Isle of Man Maritime’s Tall Ship Experience 2022.
The 6-day event has been organised for the second year by Isle of Man Maritime in conjunction with the Merseyside Adventure Sailing Trust (‘MAST’), to provide eight local young people with the once in a lifetime opportunity of sailing a 93 year-old tall ship.
TS Phoenix, a two-masted Brig, period rig, all wood construction vessel, arrived in Douglas on Monday 22nd August, where the Manx youth joined its captain and crew for sailing training around the Isle of Man.
She will dock in Douglas port today (Thursday 25th August 2022) to host an open day for sponsors and Isle of Man Maritime members to meet the crew, receive a tour of the vessel, and learn about the work of MAST and their volunteers.
While on-board, the cadets have been making video diaries and logging their journey. They have also download the EYESEA app to log any marine pollution they come across during their voyage.
Group Managing Director, Paul Murtagh, said: “We are thrilled to be a part of such an exciting and important initiative. To be able to provide a young person with an experience that gives them an insight into the maritime industry and what it is all about, whilst teaching them life skills that they can take away with them, is invaluable. We are looking forward to having a tour of the vessel and to hearing all about the adventures and learning of the cadets when they return home.”
General Manager, Lee Clarke, said: “We are delighted to have Sentient International on-board as one of our sponsors for this year’s event.
“After last year’s success, our goal this year was to have a fully Manx ship. Thanks to the kind support of Sentient and some of our other members we have succeeded – it is just fantastic! Next year, I think we want to go bigger and better and hope to fill two ships with local young people from the Isle of Man.”
TS Phoenix has a very long tradition of appearing at Maritime Festivals, Regattas, Races and events throughout Europe. She has also featured in a number of films, including Ridley Scott’s 1492: Conquest of Paradise.
She began her working life as an evangelical Mission Schooner. Twenty years later, she retired from missionary work and carried cargo until her engine room was damaged by fire. Square Sail purchased her in 1987 and she received a first aid over-haul to enable her to sail back to the UK where she underwent a complete refit. She was converted in 1996 into the two-masted 18th Century Brig she is today. For more information visit www.square-sail.com/phoenix.

Sentient International were delighted to support the 13th Annual Ship Registry Golf Day, which was held last Friday (2nd August 2022) at Rowany Golf Course, to help raise money for the Isle of Man King George’s Fund for Sailors.
