Sentient International Limited is pleased to announce that it has signed the UNESCO Biosphere Isle of Man pledge, signifying the business’ agreement to help and support Biosphere Isle of Man’s six principles:

  • To protect the Island’s natural resources;
  • To help develop the Island’s economy in a sustainable way;
  • To support and promote the Island’s cultural heritage;
  • To make an environmental impact positive wherever possible;
  • To engage with the local community; and
  • To promote the outstanding living landscape and seascape of the Island, through active involvement with UNESCO Biosphere Isle of Man.

Paul Murtagh, Group Managing Director at Sentient International, said:

“We are proud to be a partner of Biosphere Isle of Man and excited to play our part going forward.

“Signing the Biosphere Isle of Man Pledge demonstrates our commitment as a business to help promote awareness, encourage preservation, and implement initiatives that will help drive us towards a more sustainable future.

“Whether it be reducing energy, actively recycling, or finding innovative solutions to protect the future sustainability of our environment, we all have a responsibility when it comes to protecting the world and our beautiful island.”

Among the Isle of Man’s many special attributes is that it is the only ‘entire nation’ UNESCO Biosphere in the world.

In order to become a Biosphere, a location must have two key features: people and a special environment. The three central platforms of the Biosphere programme, globally, are 1. Sustainable development, 2. Conservation and 3. Education.

The programme encourages Biospheres to work towards the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals, or Global Goals, a blueprint for a better future for people and the planet.

Biosphere Isle of Man collaborates with all key sectors within the Isle of Man on projects and initiatives that connect and educate people encouraging sustainability.

Jo Overty, UNESCO Biosphere Isle of Man Project Officer, said:

“Our Biosphere status encourages us to learn about and cherish what we have in the Isle of Man and safeguard it for the future by making good decisions, as individuals, as organisations and as an Island.

“It encourages us all to think about the way we live our lives and the impact that has on sustainability and tells potential new residents and visitors that we are a special place for people and nature, and are committed to remaining so.

“We invite organisations to be partners of UNESCO Biosphere Isle of Man and have partners in five categories: Government, business, environment/culture, education and community. As of August 2021, we have 290 partners. We are delighted to have Sentient International Limited as one of them.”

Whether you are a business, charity, community group, local authority or school, you can apply to be a Partner of UNESCO Biosphere Isle of Man and take the Biosphere Pledge. Individuals can also sign up as Biosphere Buddies.

Sentient International Limited becomes proud partner of UNESCO Biosphere Isle of Man

Following the conclusion of the 61st MONEYVAL Plenary Council meeting, it has been confirmed that the Isle of Man is no longer required to report to MONEYVAL on an annual basis. This decision reflects the progress of the Isle of Man Government in developing an excellent technical framework and provides reassurance to industry.

The Isle of Man has been positively marked on 39 out of the 40 Financial Action Task Force (FATF) international standards*, which puts the Island amongst a select group of leading nations in the world for technical compliance in anti-money laundering measures.

The Isle of Man is currently in a stage referred to as ‘enhanced follow-up’ as are many other countries. This will continue to be the case until an on-site review takes place. However, with FATF and MONEYVAL facing a number of challenges this is unlikely to be for some time.

Over the coming years the Island will continue to focus on measures to enhance the prevention, detection and prosecution of money laundering, proactively engaging and promoting cooperation with businesses and international organisations.  The Isle of Man will next be required to report to MONEYVAL in three years’ time.

Chief Minister Howard Quayle MHK said:

I welcome the decision by the MONEYVAL Plenary. It is a significant milestone for the Isle of Man and reflects the Island’s commitment to playing a leading role in the global fight to tackle financial crime. The Island is grateful for the very positive engagement that has taken place with the MONEYVAL Secretariat throughout this process.

The Isle of Man is dedicated to attracting quality, legitimate business and seeks at all times to prevent the misuse of its finance sector by criminals. The Isle of Man therefore attaches great importance to the maintenance of high standards of financial regulation and supervision. We do not welcome those seeking to launder the proceeds of crime and where there is evidence of any wrongdoing in this respect then we will take the appropriate action necessary. We are proud of our progress to date and commit with renewed determination to do our part as responsible members of the international community.”

Sentient International joined Malta’s financial services community in 2019. In a recent interview with FinanceMalta, Group Managing Director, Paul Murtagh shares the company’s story.

For those that don’t know Sentient International, can you provide some background on the company?

Sentient International is a privately-owned group of independent, boutique corporate and trust service providers, with a history spanning back to 1985. The business originated in the Isle of Man, but in the last two years, we have established additional operations in Europe and Asia as part of our wider growth strategy and to expand our service proposition.

Over the years, we have assisted clients from across the globe in establishing suitable corporate structures for a variety of purposes including: trading; investment holding; estate and succession planning; real estate structuring and asset holding – many for high value luxury assets such as yachts, aircraft, fine art and antiques. Between them, the Sentient group of companies offer a comprehensive range of corporate and trust services, from full service development through to back office functionality.

Can you share a little-known fact about Sentient?

Our name and branding are a looking glass into what we believe to be our core principles. The definition of the word Sentient is “responsive to or conscious of sense impressions”. We wanted to emphasise our ability to be conscious, aware, responsive, reactive and of course, capable of feeling – something we passionately believe to be true within our business. When looking at our logo, it represents the five senses with Sentient at the centre as the ultimate sixth sense.

What are you currently working on and what are your company’s plans and strategic priorities for the coming years?

Our main priorities for the coming years are sustainable growth and, of course, our clients. We will also be focusing some of our efforts on growing our yachting and aviation portfolio. Having established long-standing relationships with both clients and intermediaries in these sectors over the years, we want to build on these and develop them further.

Are there any projects/achievements of your company that you are exceptionally proud of?

As a business, our biggest project was by far one of our biggest achievements. Following a full management buyout of the business in January 2019, we decided to rebrand to better reflect what the business had become since its inception and to celebrate its expanded capabilities. We wanted to provide a clear pointer to our direction of travel, our forward-thinking approach and our aspirations for the future.

Since then, we have been fortunate to experience substantial growth. We have established two additional offices: our European operation here in Malta and our Asia operation in Hong Kong. Our team has grown by almost 50%, all whilst retaining the same core values we pride ourselves on and offering the same great service to our clients – just with double the number of people and a greater vision.

What in your opinion makes Malta an effective jurisdiction to set up a business?

As a jurisdiction, Malta is an extremely attractive place to do business. It has a rapidly growing financial services sector that rivals some of the most established in the world and offers huge incentives to those looking to set up a business here.

Many of Malta’s sectors have experienced substantial growth over recent years. The country also continues to be a big player in niche sectors such as aviation, maritime and fintech largely thanks to its ‘can do’ approach to doing business as well as its forward-thinking business community, robust infrastructure and innovative technologies.

It is also extremely business friendly – it is cost effective, boasts an attractive tax regime, English is the official business language making it accessible internationally…and as an added bonus, it enjoys an average of 300 days sunshine per year!

What kind of people/companies in the financial services community would you want to connect with?

We would love to work collaboratively with other people and companies in the financial services community who have the same client-centric values that we do. In our business, we are required to work with not only our clients, but also their advisors. This includes their lawyers, accountants, tax/VAT advisors, brokers, managers and various others.

Paul Murtagh has worked in the financial services industry since 1997. As Group Managing Director, he oversees the Sentient group of companies. Whether nurturing start-up businesses or fulfilling the diverse needs of high-net-worth individuals and global corporate clients, Paul is guided by the same unerring integrity and professionalism for which Sentient International is renowned. He has vast experience in incorporating and managing structures across a broad spectrum of industries, from energy and mining exploration to aviation and superyachts.
